This week, from March 20–24, a very familiar name in the sport of eventing is among those involved in the Carolina International CCI and Horse Trial: Ian Stark. Stark is the cross-country course designer (CCI4*-S, 3*-S, 2*-S and A, I) at the competition in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Below, a look back at some images from his stellar career as a rider.

Among the numerous laurels in Stark’s eventing career – which really took off at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Games – the native of Scotland won four Olympic silver medals, one team gold, one team silver and one individual silver at the World Championships, one individual gold, one individual silver and one individual bronze (as well as six team golds) at the European Championships, team gold and individual bronze at the 1986 alternative World Championships and three Badmintons.

Subsequently, Stark was selector of the British national team and trained the Brazilian squad for the 2004 Athens Olympics. He also branched out into course designing, and has worked in that regard in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States. As noted on his web site, “One day Ian hopes he will join the small group of designers who are working on four-star tracks, of which there are only six in the World. These events are the ultimate aim for the riders, the horses and – inevitably – the designers.” All photos below from the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre web site.
