As reported earlier, the historic Santa Anita racetrack in California has suspended racing after numerous horse fatalities in recent weeks. The track was the site of show jumping and dressage at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, while eventing's cross-country stage took place at Fairbanks Ranch in San Diego County. That latter competition was captured in an evocative series of photos by Virginia Hill, which she shared on flickr. A few samples are below, with a link to the originals including captions.

The Individual gold medal in eventing at the 1984 Olympics was won by Charisma and New Zealand's Sir Mark Todd, profiled here as part of Grand Prix's GP 50 list of influential people in the equestrian world. See here for Virginia Hill's photo collection, which includes the U.S.'s Bruce Davidson on JJ Babu.
