Lamaze Heads Canadian Team For WEG

Eric Lamaze  will once again represent Canada at a world championship as the Canadian federation announced their showjumping team for the coming World Equestrian Games (WEG).

This will be the Canadian champion's seventh apearance at the level and he has decided to ride Chacco Kid in preference  to his Rio Olympic medallist  ride, Fine Lady. Lamaze feels the younger horse will be more suited to the rigours of the competition.  He is joined by Kara Chad, Erynn Ballard, Mario Deslauriers, and alternate Lisa Carlsen.  Lamaze best result at WEG was bronze in 2010 on the almighty Hickstead (who was awarded the best horse title at those Games). Canada have not yet won a team medal although Gail Greenough lifted the individual title in 1986 riding Mr T.

The selection of Deslauriers justifies his somewhat controversial decision to  go back to the Canadian flag after riding for the USA for some years.  However his experience will be a bonus  as, with the exception of Lamaze, the team does lack top level championship experience.  Canada have yet to win a team medal in showjumping since the World Equestrian Games were began in 1990 after the boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games.
