Video: with the World Cup underway, a quick look at horse soccer

With the 2018 FIFA World Cup now underway in Russia, hundreds of millions of sports fans across the world will be focused on soccer over the coming month. But as the video below shows, there have also been attempts at different moments to take an equestrian approach to the game.

As America's Equine Soccer League (AESL) described it in the clip, the hybrid sport – resembling polo without mallets and with a 40-inch ball – was conceived as a, “fun, family friendly sport that can be played anywhere equines can play ball and by all ages and all riding disciplines.”

According to the league’s web site, horse soccer or ‘hoofball’ was created to “combine his natural horsemanship training methods with the desire to keep training fresh and fun for the human (and equine) clients.” And while the organization does not appear to have been active in recent years, it is possible that the global tournament will inspire some pick-up games for those who have one of the giant balls in their stable.
