The veteran American rider is one of two Show Jumpers – alongside Great Britain’s Michael Whitaker – qualified for the 2018 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final next month to have competed in the previous World Cup Final in the French capital, in 1987. In fact, this will be Madden’s 11th World Cup Final, having finished on the podium three times and won once, in 2013 in Gothenburg with Simon, now retired. This week in Florida, Madden and the 12-year-old bay stallion came out on top of a field of 45 entries in the $205,000 CSIO4* Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival. But as World of Showjumping reported, Madden had initially intended to focus on Saturday’s Nations Cup class with Breitling instead of the ensuing Grand Prix. However, when the United States did not advance to the second round of the team event, the rider decided to compete with him in the Grand Prix in the place of her more rookie mount Con Taggio.Speaking about Paris, Madden said of Breitling: “He’s only scheduled to do one more week down here before the World Cup Finals, so I thought really he needed another class this week in order to build up for that.” In 1987 in Paris, Madden finished in 17th place with Medrano, with her compatriot Katharine Burdsall taking the title on The Natural.
