Halliday-Sharpe Keeps Up American Challenge At Blenheim

Liz Halliday Sharpe has produced another strong performance at the SSang Yong Blenheim International Horse Trials to go into ninth place in the Event Rider Masters (ERM) CIC3* section. This means that USA riders are placed in the top ten of all three classes after dressage completed today.

In front of David O\'Connor who is over watching the US competitors, Halliday and Fernhill By Night scored 40. 3 which leaves them only five penalties off the lead held by Britain\'s Izzy Taylor and Be Touchable. Hannah Sue Burnett is also riding in this section on Harbour Pilot but is a little off the pace in 26th place. The section will showjump tommorrow morning and then go across country in the afternoon in reverse order.

The other section to conclude the dressage today was the CIC3*  8/9 Year Old.  Japanese rider Kazuma Tomoto remains in first place in the CIC3* for eight- and nine-year-old horses at the end of dressage.

Kazuma, who only turned to eventing from showjumping less than two years ago, topped the billing on Thursday and no one managed to topple his score of 40.7 on Brookpark Vikenti during the second day of dressage.

But Britain’s Francis Whittington – a former winner of the CCI3* class here – has slipped into equal second place with Nimrod II. The nine-year-old is a new ride for Francis this year. Both he and Australia’s Christopher Burton (Cooley Lands) scored 42.6. Young British rider Holly Woodhead took fourth place with Parkfield Quintessential on 43.1.

Liz Halliday is now seventh in this section on Deniro Z and today Lauren Kieffer performed a steady test on DA Duras to lie 21st overnight. \"He was very good,\" she said \" the standard is high and it is a big section (77 starters). I am enjoying it here so far but I wouldnt mind it being a little warmer!\"

Tomorrow (Saturday, 16 September) is an action-packed day at SsangYong Blenheim. CCI3* cross-country starts at 9am, followed by the Event Rider Masters showjumping at 10.30am. Showjumping for the CIC3* for eight- and nine-year-old horses takes place in the afternoon, as does the final cross-country phase of the Event Rider Masters.

In the busy Attractions Arena, one of the highlights must be Joey, the star of the National Theatre’s War Horse show, who will be in the tradestand area in the afternoon.
