With Sandro Boy’s return to the stables of his former rider, Marcus Ehning of Germany, the 24-year-old bay stallion has reconnected not only with the elite German rider and his previous accommodations, but also Max, the mini shetland pony who has lived with a poster of his friend in the stable.

In fact, the pony had accompanied Sandro Boy when the stallion moved to France for breeding purposes in January, 2016, according to Grand Prix’s French web site. Max has also been a sidekick to the great For Pleasure (pictured at right) of Ehning (currrently ranked 20th in the Longines Rankings) and Lars Nieberg, GP reports.

As slate.com has described, elite horses often have animal companions: "Horses are not loners by nature, so it's common practice for thoroughbreds to keep a horse known as a companion pony for friendship and support. The friends that accompany racehorses both on the road and at home are not limited to horses, however—dogs, sheep, goats, and even chickens have served as companions. Famed champion Seabiscuit relied on a whole covey of kindly animals: a horse named Pumpkin, a dog named Pocatell, and a spider monkey named Jo-Jo. The champion Unbridled, who won the 1990 Kentucky Derby, enjoyed companionship from his equine friend Mustard."
