When one thinks of Olympia, the London International Horse Show, taking place this week in the British capital from December 12–18, the word 'small' does not necessarily spring to mind.

But that adjective is fitting for the crowd-pleasing annual Shetland Pony Grand National at the event, which features 9-14-year-olds under five feet tall hurtling around a miniature course at an alarming speed. Video below.

And for Frankie Dettori, MBE, the diminutive Italian jockey in the United Kingdom who at the end of July captured the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot with Enable and will ride at the Olympia in support of the Injured Jockeys Fund, this year’s Grand National will be a family affair after his son Rocco qualified for the mini-race.

Recently, the father-and-son riding duo met up at Ascot to ride together and share some tips in advance of the competition. “I can’t wait for Olympia in December and I really want to win,” Rocco told the media. “I have loved every minute of being at Ascot and I think it would be fair to say I beat my Dad fair and square on the racetrack.” For a video of a previous edition of the pony race, including the betting odds for the various pony-and-rider combinations, see below.
