In all three Olympic equestrian disciplines — Show Jumping, Eventing and Dressage — there are of course two athletes involved: rider and horse. Add to that a groom and coach, and the team effort is obvious — something top riders regularly pay tribute to. With that in mind, the divisible medal concept for the expected 2024 Paris Summer Games by French designer Philippe Starck definitely seems like a good fit for horse sports. This week, Paris’ selection as host for the 2024 Summer Olympics was all but assured after rival Los Angeles agreed to accept the consolation prize of the 2028 Games, with substantial incentives from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As part of the French capital’s bid package for the Games, Starck had been asked to come up with a new medal concept, dezeen reports. The well-known interior, industrial and architectural designer has already designed the Olympic Torch for the 1992 Winter Olympics in the Albertville, France and says that for his new medal design he had the teamwork idea at the top of his mind — allowing athletes to tangibly share their success at same time it takes place. Tokyo 2020, the next Summer Olympics, has also discussed an innovative medal design (following the lead of Rio 2016), using recycled metals from discarded smartphones in the country. Japan had reportedly already accumulated 143 kilograms of gold, 1,566 kilograms of silver and 1,112 tons of copper from discarded electronics by 2014.For a sample of Olympic medal designs (not to scale) over time, see below, followed by the 2024 Starck design. Various innovations have occurred at different moments, including in Paris in 1900 with rectangular medals. Between 1928 and 1968, the basic design remained the same.
