After months out of sight, Cornetto K is finally returning to competition. Not with the Brazilian Doda de Miranda, who rode him with great success up until this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, but with Italian Alberto Zorzi, based at the stables of Jan Tops, located beside those of his owner Athina Onassis in Valkenswaard in the Netherlands. The new pair is expected to make its debut this weekend at the CSI 5* in Basel, Switzerland.
On September 1st, two weeks after the conclusion of the Rio Olympics, Doda de Miranda revealed on social media that he no longer had the right to be in contact with AD Cornetto K, his mount in Rio. A consequence of the ongoing divorce proceedings between the Brazilian rider and Athina Onassis. Since then, while the rich Greek rider has returned to her own normal competition schedule, that has not been the case for De Miranda, who has only ridden in a CSI 2*-W in São Paulo since the Olympics. A state of affairs which seems very far away from Valkenswaard and the career that De Miranda was leading at the highest levels of the sport until this summer, with appearances at CSI 5*s every weekend. And at the Deodoro Equestrian Park in Rio, Doda and Cornetto K put in the best Brazilian performance of the Games, coming in ninth in the individual competition after Brazil narrowly missed out on the team final.Since then, no information had slipped out about the future of the crack horse, owned by Victory Equestrian Sport BV and who remains under the control of Onassis. No information, that is, until the riders list was published for the Basel CSI 5* — the first big competition of the year, which begins January 12th in the Swiss city. The list revealed that the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding (Cornet Obolensky x Calido I) would be riding with Italy’s Alberto Zorzi, based in the stables of Dutch dealer Jan Tops, beside those of Onassis…It is a heavy loss for De Miranda, and a surprising recruit for Zorzi. More and more present in high-level competition, the 27-year-old Italian has been racking up good performances — notably a victory in October in Oslo at the World Cup Grand Prix with the excellent Fair Light van’t Heike, former mount of his stable-mate Edwina Tops-Alexander. Will Cornetto K, trained by Belgium’s Dominique Hendrickx and ridden previously by Brazil’s Yuri Mansur before being acquired by Onassis, remain with Zorzi for long? Is he destined to be sold? One thing is for sure: if he has a good showing in Basel and following competitions, there will be no shortage of offers.
