It’s a new American bid to join the world of elite Eventing.
The Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area in Maryland has announced that they have applied to host a CCI4*. The Area is the current host of the CCI** and CCI*** Fair Hill International Horse Trials. There are currently only six CCI4* events in the world, with the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington, Kentucky — part of the FEI Classics series — the only one in North America. The others in the top-level series are “Les 4 Etoiles de Pau” in France, the “Australian International 3 Day Event” in Adelaide, Badminton Horse Trials (GBR), Luhmuhlen CCI**** (GER), and the Burghley Horse Trials (GBR). Late last month at its inaugural edition, the Ocala Three-Day in Florida also announced that it is aiming for a top-level 4* designation by 2018. “We are excited by the possibility of hosting a 4* event,” Fair Hill International Executive Director Carla Geiersbach told the USEA web site. “With only six events in the whole world, it would be quite an honor to be selected. The coalition of groups working together on this project is truly amazing. We created a fantastic proposal.”The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, which owns and manages the Fair Hill property, believes site improvements will provide a great benefit to all uses of the park, both equestrian and non-equestrian.“Regardless of the outcome of the 4* proposal, there remains tremendous interest and support to upgrade Fair Hill’s infrastructure for a variety of recreational uses,” Maryland Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. According to the United States Eventing Association, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has not yet outlined a timeline for the suggestion of a site as a CCI4* host to the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).
