Endurance Horse Dies At Euston Park, UK's Premier Ride
The sad tale of horse deaths continued today but his time on British soil when Perla, a horss competing for Spain at the UK Endurance Festival at Euston Park, collapsed and died near the end of the 120km CEIO 2* ride.
The conditions were perfect for endurance but even so, in this class just under 50% of the starters completed. Perla is listed on the results as CI (Catastrophically Injured) but it must be said that the Ground Jury are limited in their list of categories for non completion and a statement from Euston Park read;
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Perla CPS ridden by Omar Blanco Rodrigo (ESP) and owned by Juma’s Team S.L., competing in the CEIO2* at Euston Park, Suffolk, collapsed and died at approx. 15:30 on 18th August 2018. A further statement will be released once the post-mortem has taken place.
According to the FEI database, Perla was a ten year old chestnut mare, who had not been competed excessively and has had some good results including winning a ride at the level last year, albeit with a different rider. Omar Blanco Rodrigo is an experienced competitor currently ranked 28th in the world and with a team of nine registered horses. He has won at this level (and also at 3*) this season on other horses. The pair were in tenth place and travelling at an average speed of approximately 22kmp when the incident occured.
The title sponsor of the UK Endurance Festival is H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum who was present today to watch one of his countymen win this ride and another win the feature CEI3*. Euston Park offers significant prize money to the winners and those who complete the rides. Much of the course is run over parts of the Shadwell Estate, which is oened by HH Sheikh Mohammed's brother, Sheikh Hamdan. Euston Park is one of the neighbouring estates in the area.
